Survival Mode: it’s time to get out of it!



As Black women, we’ve been taught by society that we are “strong women” who can do it all, yet still get “less than” treatment from the same society. With the many pressures to conform in the workplace and in the community, Black women have had to live on edge for many generations.


Living in survival mode is our bodies responding to stress and stressful experiences from both the past and present. Passed down from generation to generation, these women faced discrimination, racial traumas, unequal pay, and maternal mortality rates skyrocketing over the years.


The most recent civil rights unrest we’ve experienced within the past couple of years was extreme to witness, let alone hear about daily. Who could blame a woman for just wanting to live and wanting to see her family live to see another day?


What is survival mode? Living in survival mode is living for the day without thinking about the future. It’s focusing on what ‘could’ happen and therefore missing out on great opportunities. It’s feeling stuck in a hole that you’ll never dig yourself out of.


Black women have lived with worries of what could happen based on how others would perceive their hairstyles, demeanor, or clothing. Many have felt stuck in careers where no matter what they ‘could’ do, they weren’t going to get that promotion.
